I thought awhile about how to write this week’s mantra. I did not want it to sound depression, but rather I wanted it to remind us that life is short and that all moments should be embraced. Some of you may know that I am a huge Anthony Bourdain fan and I was greatly surprised and saddened when he chose to take his life. Life can be extremely hard and we can never truly understand how another person feels within. His enthusiasm for travel, culture and food always inspired me. I would patiently wait and watch his shows when released. But, after his passing, I was afraid to watch the unseen shows too quickly. Watching the last show felt too conclusive. But, then I saw that the final show was in Southern Italy. I was curious; were we in the same locations at all? Sure enough, as I watched I saw Anthony and Francis Ford Coppola sitting in the same courtyard I taught yoga and entertained retreat guests.
I had the pleasure and honor of hosting a retreat at Francis Ford Coppola’s estate, Palazzo Margherita, in Bernalda, Italy, in 2015. It was magical and stunningly beautiful. As I watched Anthony’s last show, rather than be sad, I remembered all the happy moments that were shared in this same location. We truly embraced life that week. We drank too much wine, ate too much food, and we laughed non-stop. Oh and of course, we did yoga throughout the beautiful garden. It was a week filled with moments, I will always cherish. Life may not always seem to be filled with magic, but what if we simply stopped to enjoy each moment and notice the beauty within it? There is something always to be cherished. Let’s do our best this week to embrace and enjoy the moment. I think we can all find some extra magic and beauty.
This week’s mantra:
I will see the magic within the moment.
I will see the magic within the moment.
I will see the magic within the moment.
